A Train Filled Day

Ashland is the nearest town to us and where we go to run errands. Typically we make a stop at the local grocery store, visit the deli and grab something to eat for a picnic. Even on cold winter days like this one, we still take time to visit our favorite train station.

We awoke Yuletide morning to find Amtrak tickets in our stockings for DC. A day trip up and back to experience a train ride and visit Union Station. It was a cold morning that began with seeing a freight train heading south bound through Ashland.

Up Close & Personal

Feel The Power

One of the amazing things about the old Ashland train station is that you can be pretty close to the trains as they pass through town. Even as they slow down to the required 35mph they can still be a powerful force rumbling by. Even standing at the far edge of the walkway you can feel the ground shake in your feet. And the sound of the engines, especially on the longer trains that require multiple engines to pull greater number of cars, will rattle your chest.

Dinner Time & Trains

Nothing Like A Picnic

One nice thing about working in Richmond is that Ashland is on the way home. Each day I’d run through town and watch for the installation of the new track. On a few occasions I would stop and take a picture of the trains for my little man.
