When Controversy Impacts Fans

I’m a NASCAR fan. I have been a fan since I was 13 years old. You’ll have to trust me when I say that was a very long time ago.

Over the decades NASCAR has gone through many changes. Some good. Some not so good. But one thing that has been consistent throughout its history is the sense of family between competitors and fans.

We like being race fans. We love our drivers and we’re thrilled that our stars are approachable and don’t take us for granted. Continue reading

Historic Nascar Truck Race On Dirt!

Eldora Speedway

Eldora Speedway

Eldora Race Format

A Nascar race on dirt has not been seen for 40 years. The last time Nascar saw a dirt track was September 30, 1970 in Raleigh, N.C. Richard Petty won the Home State 200 at the one-mile State Fairgrounds Speedway. But that’s about to change on July 24, 2013!

The Nascar Camping World Truck series heads to New Weston, Ohio and the famous Eldora Speedway dirt track owned by 3-time Sprint Cup Champion Tony Stewart for the inaugural “Midsummer Classic”.

Nascar announced on April 09, 2013 the format for this historic race. Unlike asphalt or concrete, dirt tracks have long held a different format to racing events. And that will be the case with this inaugural event. Anyone familiar with dirt track racing will recognize the heat sessions to qualify for the main event at the end of the evening. And that’s basically what’s happening at Eldora. Continue reading

Fontana California – March 24, 2013  Sprint Cup Auto Club 400

Anyone who thought the Gen6 cars were boring, didn’t watch the Nascar race at Fontana. The entire day was entertaining, with battles up front and back in the pack. But nothing like the final 10 laps.

After a late race caution, the last restart began with 11 laps to go. Kyle Busch was leading, Joey was 2nd followed by Tony, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Kevin Harvick, Greg Biffle, Carl Edwards and Matt Kenseth was 10th. The green flag flew and Joey didn’t get a very good restart. Tony was up on his bumper right away dropping to the inside line to make the pass. Continue reading

Fontana California – March 24, 2013  Sprint Cup Auto Club 400

First everyone in our house hopes Denny Hamlin is ok. As of this post he has been transported to the local area hospital near Fontana California. Kyle Busch said he heard it was a back injury, but no official news has been released.

Update: 03/25 Nascar Tweeted this today:
@dennyhamlin suffered L1 compression fracture in Sunday’s wreck. More information -> http://bit.ly/11EpfLG   #NASCAR

More information can be found at NIH.gov: Compression Fractures Of The Back.

The race promised to be thrilling from the get go. The battle all week between Denny and Joey built the tension even before the cars hit the track.

Their battle started after the Daytona 500 Twitter Feud, when Denny tweeted a snide comment to Brad Keselowski about Joey’s racing. Which carried over to last week’s race in Bristol and the Twitter Feud Part II (by Nate Ryan USAToday). Continue reading

Did You Miss It?

Well here it is.

After Sunday’s Daytona 500, Denny Hamlin; driver of the #11 FedEx Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing, expressed his frustration on Twitter. Evidently Denny was upset with his 14th place finish. (2013 Daytona 500 Results @ SBNation).

After the race he tweeted to Brad Keselowski:
@dennyhamlin
keselowski sorry I couldn’t get close to you cuz your genius teammate was too busy messing up the inside line 1 move at a time

A little while later Joey Logano, driver of the #22 Penzoil Ford for Penske Racing; tweeted a response. But if you check Joey’s Twitter page, you may not find that response. Continue reading

NASCAR Nationwide Crash Hurts Fans

2013 Daytona NNS Race Proves It’s Still A Dangerous Sport

Fourteen people were transported from the race track and fourteen were treated in the stands. On Sunday morning, all fans transported to local area hospitals were listed in stable condition with non-life threatening injuries.

Like many Nascar fans the first thing we want to share are our prayers and thoughts to everyone involved in yesterday’s tragic crash. To those injured, their families and all the fans who were sitting in the crash area. Though not everyone was hurt, the trauma of yesterday’s crash impacted everyone in the stands and even some folks at home who had loved ones at the race.

Let’s not forget the drivers involved as well. They maybe waking up today with bumps and bruises but each one of them has express more concerned for the fans than themselves. Finally we can’t say thank you and give enough accolades to the first responders and to the fans in the stands who jumped into action and began helping those around them. Continue reading

TV and Streaming Video Schedules

It’s that time of year! The opening week of the Nascar series openers. Seems to have taken so long to get here over the winter months. But now it’s here and we’re gearing up for a great week leading up to the grand race, the Sprint Cup Daytona 500.

This will be Tony Stewart’s 15th attempt to win the big one! It’s one of the few races he hasn’t conquered. He has won at Daytona’s summer race several times. But the season opener has eluded my favorite driver. I’m sending out my prayers, hopes, dreams, crossing my fingers, casting a spell, sending out good energy and whatever it takes to have this year be THE year he finally wins!

It’s the opening for Danica’s full time ride in a Stewart-Haas Racing Chevy for GoDaddy in the Sprint Cup series too. So we surely hope she has a good showing, along with the #39 Team of the QuickenLoans Ryan Newman Chevy as well. Continue reading

05/06/2012 – Tony Stewart’s Post Race Interview at Talladega

Bizarre or Vintage Tony? I say:  Welcome Back Smoke!

Tony Stewart - Talladega Interview

Tony Stewart - May 6th Talladega Interview

Tony’s comments immediately after his frustrating finish at Talladega on May 6th have been labeled as funny, sarcastic, bizarre, disrespectful, a mockery and degrading to the sport. Questions have been raised about potential fines by Nascar for violation of Section 12-4-A of the NASCAR rulebook, which covers everything “detrimental to the sport.” If Nascar fined him for this, fans would be all over the sanctioning body raising cain!

Thankfully Nascar announced today they will not be penalizing the People’s Champion for his comments, saying they are not detrimental to the sport.

For those of us who know Tony’s sarcasm, the interview was vintage Stewart and we LOVE it! His sarcasm is part of what we like most about him. And truth be told, his comments were making a point! NASCAR needs to make a few changes before they return to this 2.66-mile track. Continue reading

The Best Nascar Invocation – Ever!

July 23, 2011
Nascar Nationwide Series Race In Nashville Tennessee

One, if not the best portion of Saturday’s Nationwide Race in Nashville, came from Pastor Joe Nelms who proves an invocation doesn’t have to be stoic to be effective. Right away fans began tweeting, blogging and posting on social media networks how great the pre-race prayer was. Labeling it the Best Invocation Ever! Within minutes the video was posted on YouTube and sports blogs. SBNation.com‘s Brian Floyd likened the invocation to a scene from Talladega Nights. What some may not know is this isn’t the first time we’ve seen Pastor Joe deliver a pre-race invocation and make it a memorable one. We remember last years invocation which was equally jovial, though perhaps not as memorable as the one delivered tonight!

The AC360 1940’s Doll Test Revisited

Earlier this year, AC360°, with the help of a seasoned team of researchers, conducted a pilot study based on the 1940’s doll test. In this pilot study, more than 130 kids were asked a series of questions about five cartoon dolls with varying skin tones. Half of the children were African-American and half were white, half were in the north and half in the south. [More @ AC360]

I was concerned when I asked my 7 year old son the same question and gave the same answer as the children in the AC360 test. The darkest child is the bad child. This perception isn’t something he gets from us at home. So where did he get it from? When I asked him why, he first said he didn’t know. It wasn’t until he looked at the picture and associated the “color” with a “person” that he said “Because he’s African-American”. It was that delay in his searching for a reason that caused me to realize it’s the test that implies racism and not anything he’s gotten from home, school or even the media. It was the test itself.

The method of these tests are flawed for a number of reasons. Continue reading
