Week 2 – 2010 NFL Picks – Spring & The Prince’s Results

Not a bad second week. Of course my Redskins just laid down and gave their giant lead away to Houston. It was very disappointing, but the defense did not come out in the second half and stand up to Houston’s offense. Watching the Mannings competing against each other was not only interesting, but it was an exciting game as well. I’m secretly glad Peyton won. Eli has a long career ahead of him, he has plenty of time to make up for his brotherly loss. So here’s the final results for week 2 for the Prince and I.

Week 2 – 2010 NFL Picks – Spring & The Prince’s Picks

Time for Week 2 already? Where did the week go?
No big insights this week. I picked Philly over Detroit primarily because Vick is starting and I think he gives the team a major boost in performance. I’m counting on my Titans to win again at home. And finally, I’m not sure people understand how much of a confidence builder the Redskins get after beating their biggest rival the Cowboys. The rivalry between the Skins and the Cowboys never diminished within the hearts and minds of the fans. It may have waxed and waned amongst the team and the NFL over all, but it never faded for fans. As indicated by the intensity and electricity of the Skin’s stadium last week. That emotional high should carry over to this week as Washington takes on Houston.

Once again keep in mind the Prince makes his pick based on which team is the animal, or which animal will beat the other animal. It’s interesting how he perceives animal strength, it’s not just brawn that wins the day. He seems to think if you’re a bird, you are invincible. 😉

So here are our picks for the week.

Week 1 – 2010 NFL Picks – Spring & The Prince’s Results

Well not a bad start to the 1st week. My picks finished 10wins to 6 losses. Not great, but better than some of the professional prognosticators in TV. The best game in my book was of course my Redskins vs. Dallas. Those last 3 seconds were definitely a nail-bitter. But woohoo the Cowboys self-destructed! Hahaha!!!

The little Prince didn’t fair as well. His method of picking is base on the name of the team. If it’s a bird, ie: Cardinals, Eagles, Ravens, Falcons; he picks them to win. He likes animals over objects for the most part. Not sure it’s the best method, but it works for him and that’s all that matters. He’s excited that he won 6 picks last week and didn’t even seem to listen that between us, I won the week. He asked; but it just didn’t matter because his Eagles won.  Not sure how he’s going to feel when his Eagles play my Skins.

So here are our 1st week results:

2010 Nascar Chase Is On!

The 2010 Nascar Chase has begun after last night’s Air Guard 400 at Richmond International Raceway. The race itself was less than exciting, in general. But the last 10 laps did get interesting as our native Richmonder Denny Hamlin took the checkered flag over team mate Kyle Busch. Coach Joe Gibbs had a great night in that his entries finished 1st, 2nd and 4th as Joey Logano came in just behind Jimmie Johnson.

Our boys didn’t fare real well however. Tony Stewart had improved his position to the top 5, but began dropping back like a rock after the 1st caution adjustment. Seems the team just couldn’t get those changes corrected and he finished the race in 16th.

Ryan Newman’s chance to get into the chase were dashed as Bowyer had a great race and finished in the top 10. But it was great seeing Ryan fight for all they had and finish the overall race in 11th.

And what happened to Dale Jr? He qualified well, starting in the top 10. But that was all he wrote. He dropped back during the entire race like a rock and finished 34th. All in all it was dismal year for Jr. But Sir Evil remain a true fan.

So our boys end the season like this:

Regular Season Stats
Driver Wins Top 5s Top 10s 11-20 21-30 31->
Tony 1 7 6 4 7 1
Dale Jr   2 4 10 6 3
Ryan 1 2 7 10 3 4
Joey   3 6 6 5 4

The Chase for the Cup begins Sept. 19th in New Hampshire. The points have been reset and the standings going into the race are:

RK DRIVER PTS BACK WINS TOP5 TOP10 DNF EARNINGS
1 Denny Hamlin 5060 6 10 11 2 $4,292,228
2 Jimmie Johnson 5050 -10 5 10 14 4 $5,338,436

11 Matt Kenseth 5000 -60 0 5 10 0 $4,091,273
12 Clint Bowyer 5000 -60 0 4 14 2 $3,402,729

At last years Chase race in Richmond, the Little Prince decided he liked Carl Edwards. Perhaps because he was able to sit in Carl’s Nationwide Scotts car, which might have been a good luck charm for Carl. He won the Nationwide race that night. Or because the Prince really likes “The Duck” from Aflac. What ever his reasons, we’ll be following Carl from now on as his #2 guy.

So here’s hoping Tony and Carl smoke ’em all in the Chase! Good Luck Guys! And if not one of our guys, ANYONE BUT JIMMIE!!!!!!

Week 1 – 2010 NFL Picks – Spring & The Prince’s Picks

It’s football season at last! The hard part for us is that it’s also the end of the season for Nascar. And not just the last 10 races, but the Race for the Chase! And 2 of our guys are in the hunt for the title. But the little Prince (who’s 7 now) and I are looking forward to pitting our picks against Daddy (Sir Evil) again this year. We did pretty well over all last year. I hope we can do better this year. Of course the first 2 weeks are the hardest for me to pick. You can’t totally base your picks on last year’s team, or pre-season performance. So here are our picks for the first week.

Is Nascar A Sport? Are Nascar Drivers Athletes?

The Questions That Simply Won’t Go Away
By Springwolf – Updated 11/2013

It’s a continual question from those who don’t know racing and don’t take the time to learn:

image2.jpgEvery year some ‘sports writer’ or newspaper columnist voices the question and then attempts to answer it by saying Nascar is just a southern activity attended by beer drinking rednecks. They profess to know more than the millions of fans who watch their favorite driver, team and races by claiming that Nascar isn’t a sport and the drivers aren’t athletes. “All they do is make left turns and waste gas” is their typical line.

Sadly their rhetoric is voiced by the millions of people who don’t have a clue what racing is about. Add to that the age of Twitter and Facebook which gives a platform to people to degrade and put down anyone who does see things the way they do.

After a while it does get annoying and fans of Nascar sometimes feel the need or desire to respond to these questions. We all know it falls on deaf ears and rarely makes a difference. But many of us love our sport and want to defend it against those that simply use stereotypical put-downs to degrade something they don’t understand. Continue reading

2009 NFL Superbowl pick

We’re a little late in posting the results of our 2009 NFL Season picks. But better late than never.

The little prince and I were very excited to see the Saints win the Superbowl. We both picked them to win and it ended our season on a high note. The prince wasn’t interested in how he did for the year, which is probably good since he didn’t pick the first several weeks. But I didn’t do so badly. A total of 173 wins out of 267 games. That’s only 94 picks lost. Woohoo.

Well, here it is, a chance for the Ain’ts to make history and earn the name Saints by finally winning a Superbowl. Apparently, I’m going to miss it.

I’d like to bitch about Comcast, well I am going to bitch about them, but it’s not really their fault this time. On the best of days it takes them forever to get their equipment repaired. Today is Sunday. Today is the day after Mother Earth put a fresh foot plus of new snow on top of a heavy coating of sleet, and the three inches of snow left over from the fifteen inches of snow from last week. If we are lucky, we might get to see the Daytona race next weekend.

So, I will likely try to watch the football game online, probably in vain. It appears that the NFL is pretty sure that no one on dial-up would ever visit their site. I don’t have flash enabled and the site still takes nearly five minutes to come up to a usable form. I’ve never been on there long enough to find out how long the whole thing takes, it always seems to still be loading by the time I’m finished looking at the scores.

Why don’t you have broadband you ask? Well, there is only one “broadband” provider here… you guessed it, Comcast! And just to spread the rant around, I haven’t forgotten about the FIOS from Verizon that will “be installed here real soon, sometime in 2008.”

I guess I should count myself lucky since we were the last house on the power line who still had power all night. And I do mean last house, the next door neighbor and everyone else west of me were out. The only light on the far side of the lake was one coming from what sounded like a distant generator.

And I suspect that all that light out at the end of my driveway when I went to bed was a Rappahannock Electric crew working to change that. And on the topic of utility bitching, let me say that I have never had a bad experience with Rappahannock. When Isabelle came bowling-for-people here the power was out less than twelve hours. When one of the local squirrels committed suicide without completely knocking out the power, the crew went door to door warning us that they would be cutting power for a few minutes for the repair to give us time to get computers shut down safely. They even provide discounts on our prescription medicines.

E.W.

And for those of you who are thinking of me as a bitchy-little-girl, bitching is cathartic if you have faith in the Universe. I got the best laugh ever just as I finished this post. The cable came back on right as I typed the period on the last sentence. What was on? A Comcast commercial… Nice work and nice timing.

NFL Super Bowl XLIV – Our Picks

Tonight is the Pro Bowl in Florida and the Prince started talking about his pick for the Super Bowl. We talked about the strength of the Colts and their amazing season. But we also talked about the 2 games they threw at the end of the season and how un-sportsman like that was. We talked about New Orleans never being in a Super Bowl before and how a win would give a boost to the heart and soul of that still devastated town.

Because of the thrown games, we don’t think the Colts “deserve” to win the Super Bowl. Both teams have a shot at winning. The Colts have the skill and strength on the field. But the Prince and I think the Saints also have the talent and skill, but they also have more heart and desire for the win. That is an edge that no amount of skill can beat. So we’re both going with the New Orleans Saints to win Super Bowl XLIV!!

NFL Conference Championships – Spring & The Prince’s Results

The Conference weekend wasn’t a surprise. But at least both games weren’t blow outs. Minnesota really gave New Orleans a run for their money. Kudos to both teams for a well fought contest and clean game. It was hard watching as here in our house we were routing for both the Vikings and Brett and the Saints who have never been to the big show. I think the right team won. The Saints deserve to go and WIN the Super Bowl!
